Weekly Reflection - FIRST WEEK OF FIRST PHASE TEACHING PRACTICE
WEEKLY REFLECTION- FIRST WEEK OF TEACHING PRACTICE
The first week of my teaching internship at Government HSS Anchalummood—which began on July 14, 2025—was an eye-opening blend of learning, reflecting, and growing. Alongside my dear friends Aleena and Riza, representing the English Department of Fathima Memorial Training College, Mylapore, I stepped into the school not just as a student but as a budding teacher.
The school welcomed us with warmth. The teachers were encouraging, and the environment felt suitable for both teaching and learning. Throughout the week, we found ourselves immersed in a variety of responsibilities—from handling substitution periods and maintaining classroom discipline to helping serve lunch and judging an extempore competition. A particularly rewarding experience for me was teaching the poem “The Seven Ages of Man” to Class 8 G. It was with its challenges—managing classroom behaviour was something I had to quickly learn to navigate. But the smiles and curiosity of the students reminded me of why I chose this path.
Our week was also enriched by co-curricular engagements. We helped organize the English subject exhibition during the Reading Week celebrations, contributing books, managing and arranging charts, and conducting a Shakespeare quiz that turned out to be a big hit among the students. A valuable meeting with the English faculties and fellow trainees provided us with insights into effective planning and teaching approaches for the upcoming weeks.
This initial week reinforced a powerful truth: teaching is as much about connecting with students as it is about content delivery. It demands creativity, patience, and the willingness to evolve. Looking ahead, I hope to create an engaging, student-friendly classroom atmosphere.
